The Scottish Hydro Challenge will continue to play a critical part in the development of the professional game in Scotland as it provides our best young players the chance to compete at the level required to gauge if they have what it takes to make it to the top level.
The top 20 players on the Challenge Tour Rankings at the end of each season win a place on The European Tour and many of the game’s top players made their way in golf through the Challenge Tour, with Martin Kaymer, Edoardo Molinari and Ian Poulter the current stand out examples of former graduates making it to the very highest echelon of the sport.
The 2011 Scottish Hydro Challenge could see many of the future stars of The European Tour tread the fairways of Spey Valley, with Molinari having finished second in the event in 2009 and Italy’s teen sensation, Matteo Manassero following his compatriot to the Highlands last year.
This year’s tournament will also serve as the perfect warm-up to The Barclays Scottish Open, with the Scottish Hydro Challenge being staged just two weeks before Scotland’s national open at the nearby Castle Stuart Golf Links.
