The first Scottish Hydro Challenge, won by Englishman Sam Walker, was contested at Murcar Links before the tournament moved to the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel and Golf Resort in 2007, beginning a relationship that has seen the Macdonald Hotels Group, alongside title sponsors Scottish Hydro and Government supporters EventScotland, become a key partner to the event.
Englishman Robert Dinwiddie (2007) was followed into the winner’s enclosure at Cardrona by Dutchman Taco Remkes in 2008 before the tournament found a new home, at the magnificent Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Course, in the Scottish Highlands.
That move north coincided with successive home winners in Jamie McLeary (2009) and George Murray (2010), with both men using home advantage to the fullest.
Of the five past winners of the event, Walker, Dinwiddie, Remkes and Murray all went on to secure a place on The European Tour in the same year they won in Scotland, making the Scottish Hydro Challenge title one of the most coveted on the Challenge Tour, where the top 20 players at the end of each season win promotion to The European Tour.
